» Trip One - City Seeker
For those that like to see the cities of the world, you can make it to Sydney and Melbourne in a three-day trip, with one day of driving in between.
Day One – Sydney
The best way to see Sydney in a day is probably to take a few of the city’s walking tours. Sydney has developed several one to two hour tours for you to take in the sights of the city. You can download the maps of these walking tours at http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.
1) Colony Tour – Departing from the Customs House and covering Millers Point and The Rocks, this tour will give you a glimpse of the life of early Europeans that came to Sydney – convicts, soldiers, whalers and sailors. Although The Rocks and Millers Point have changed throughout the generations, remnants and traces of these early times can be found.
2) Commerce Tour – Taking you past important banks, shops and warehouses, you’ll get a good idea of Sydney’s commercial history through these buildings. You’ll walk through the heart of the city's financial and retail district, seeing important landmarks, observing their architectural features and the learning history behind them. The walk starts at St James Station and finishes at the QVB.
3) Community Tour – Beginning at Town Hall and heading south, this tour will take you into the one-time industrial backyard of Sydney. You’ll see Sydney’s Spanish Quarter, Chinatown, and the most significant 20th century Aboriginal site in Sydney.
4) Heritage Tour – This will take you to 20 historical Sydney sites. You’ll be able to compare past and present Sydney and see how the city has changed.
Apart from these tours, there is also the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge to fill your day.
Day Two – Traveling
There is a lot to see between Sydney and Melbourne and a lot to do as well. Depending on what you want to see will determine if you travel along the coast or through the wilderness.
Day Three – Melbourne
Melbourne, the capital of Victoria and a cultural hub, is known for fashion, food, entertainment and sport. This is a city of style, architecture, trams, theatres and art. Rattling trams, parklands singing with blackbirds, stately architecture and palm trees – it's like northern Europe on the Mediterranean.
The influence of decades of immigration from all over the world has made Melbourne a paradise for those who love food and wine. Whole streets are dedicated to food, be it Indian, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, or a host of other styles. There is also a host of world-class wines.
Melbourne is home to the Melbourne Cup, tennis’ Australian Open and the Qantas Australia Grand Prix. As for the biggest names from the music world, as well as major theatrical productions, it's most likely you'll see them in Melbourne first. Both premier performing-arts establishments and art galleries are well represented in Melbourne. Several major venues act as focal points for the city's social and cultural scene, while world-class collections of art from all over the globe are represented in public and private galleries.
