Encountering these captivating sea birds is among Australia's most thrilling wildlife experiences. Most charming of all are the little or fairy penguins, which stand about 30 centimeters tall and weigh about a kilogram. Found along the coasts of Australia, little penguins spend the day at sea and can often be seen when they return to their sandy burrows in the evening. To see the little penguins at close quarters, wear dark clothing and remain still and they will often walk right past you.

1) Phillip Island, Victoria – This Penguin Reserve is renowned for its dusk viewing of little penguins as they march across the beach to their sand dune burrows.

2) Bass Strait – Here you can see thriving colonies of fairy penguins. Ask any local, they'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

3) Penguin Island – Only 42 kilometers from Perth in Western Australia, the Island Discovery Centre on Penguin Island gives visitors a close-up look at little penguins that have been injured or abandoned by their mothers.

4) Penneshaw – Although it’s known as Kangaroo Island, little penguins can be seen each evening as they waddle ashore at Penneshaw, near the island's eastern tip.
