While aurora are usually visible only in the higher northern latitudes, sometimes even further south we get treated to grand auroral displays! It’s a fairly common occurrence for those living at 40-45N latitude, and not unheard of during extreme events to dip as low as 35N! While you think you might not be in the running, those numbers take in all of Canada and most of the United States—as well as Russia, most of Europe and even northern China!
Most auroral displays at lower latitudes are deep pink and red. Viewers slightly more northerly will often experience ghostly green clouds and white/red spires that look like searchlights sweeping the sky. The continual shifting ebb and flow of these displays make them some of the most fascinating things in the sky to watch.
Observing success depends greatly on the general darkness of the sky and the shift of the auroral oval.
