Where can I go to find a safe, dark place to observe?

That’s really not as difficult as you might think. First try contacting any astronomy clubs in your area. Many of them have their own observing sites and you may wish to join the club!

Another great resource is both local and state parks. While many of them close at dark, if you make prior arrangements with a park officer or ranger, chances are you’ll be allowed to use an area to observe. County schools also have practice fields, and may allow you to make arrangements in advance.

If that is not an option, try speaking with someone who lives rurally. You would be surprised at how many farmers will give you permission to set up along a tractor path or in an unused field. Perhaps you might have a friend or relative who would be willing to allow you to set up a telescope. The key is to ask permission, tell them when to expect you, and be sure not to litter or make excessive noise.

Be a good neighbor and offer to share the view!
