Should I administer the survey myself, or outsource it?

You can administer the survey yourself, but you might get better results by outsourcing it. For one thing, employees are often more candid when completing the survey if they know that responses will be collected and analyzed by a third-party firm. Also, without expert help in designing and administering the survey, you may not know exactly what to ask—or what to make of the results. Also, conducting such a survey can be time-consuming, which makes it much more likely that you’ll put it off. If you hire it done, you’re more likely to actually complete the survey, giving you valuable information to improve your company that much sooner.

Some survey companies offer generic, ready-made surveys for free or for a nominal fee. For a custom-made survey, expect to spend a couple thousand dollars or more. And before you balk at that fee, remember that you’d probably spend that much in the long run when you consider your opportunity costs of distracting you away from your everyday business to handle the survey. And the money you save in keeping employees happy—and reducing survey—will be well worth it!
