What does employee recognition look like in practice?

Recognizing employees can take on any number of appearances, from the simple to the extravagant:

- Money/Salary Bonuses
- Opportunity for advancement or new responsibilities
- Vacation time
- Food
- Solicited and accepted feedback from employees on corporate programs and philosophies
- Employee-designed programs
- Gift certificates to local businesses
- Gratitude and compliments

It is also important to note that recognizing an employee can be as simple as showing interest in who he is as a person, in addition to what he brings to the table as a worker. Dale Carnegie said, “If you want to win friends, make it a point to compliment them. If you remember my name, you pay me a subtle compliment; you indicate that I have made an impression on you. Remember my name and you add to my feeling of importance.”

Has your small business had a successful month? Buy lunch for the office or give everyone an extra day off at Christmas. Has one employee been especially instrumental in recent success? Seek her out for her opinion on what the company should do in the future or compliment her to your superiors while she is present.

Employee recognition can take place on the individual or team basis, in public or in private. There are no rules to how far you can go or how creative you can be—the goal is simply to make the employees feel appreciated and valued.
