What about employees who deserve a reprimand more often than a reward? What about employees who don’t crave recognition but are simply good, hard workers?

One of the basic guidelines of employee recognition is that it is fair. Favoritism, perceived or real, can have devastating effects on workplace morale and productivity. To counteract this, it is important that all employees are eligible to receive rewards and that the criteria for the rewards are clearly established. Informal recognition should also be regularly given to all employees to demonstrate clearly that there is no bias.

In this way, positive reinforcement can also influence less productive employees without necessitating public or private reprimands or regular motivation. If all but one employee received a work incentive, that employee has no one to blame but himself.

If a team has earned special recognition, recognize that team as a whole, rather than only one or two members.

Those rare employees who work hard regardless of any recognition or reward are especially valuable. Don’t take their diligence for granted, rather, reassure them of their worth in the company, so that they never have reason to doubt. Recognize them along with their co-workers. The American Express Incentive Services, LLC, reports that sixty percent of employees say they would be unlikely to look for another job if they were assured of a “bright future” by their current employer.
