How do I make employee recognition most effective?

The most effective forms of employee recognition are positive, immediate, and specific. Define specific and reachable goals, which can be achieved by an individual or a team, and promptly come through on your end of the bargain when the goal has been achieved.

In addition, simple and random forms of employee recognition can also be highly effective. Gratitude, casual but sincere conversation, or a small surprise gift, all serve to remind the employee that he/she is a valued person and piece of the company.

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara said, “Brains, like hearts, go where they are appreciated.” If an employee feels his/her efforts and contributions are not appreciated, or would be more appreciated elsewhere, where is the incentive to stay put?

Employees who are recognized feel more valued and, therefore, will be more productive in their work. In this case, a little employee recognition goes a long way in demonstrating to employees that they are valued as individuals and as workers.
