Everyday copy paper can be used to create stationery, envelopes, and for layering over cardstock and hand-made papers. Specialty papers can be purchased which are hand made. Ten and twenty pound bond is the most common paper, and even though it is most often white, it can be purchased in other colors and then decorated with rubber stamps and ink.

Cardstock is the most common material for producing post cards, folded cards, and even gift cardholders. Because of its heavier weight (60 to 80 lbs. per case), it is sturdier and will create a more extravagant finished card.

Papers and cardstock come in both glossy and matte finishes. Glossy surfaces cause the ink colors to be more vivid and matte finishes mute the colors, creating a softer appearance. Cards can be purchased that are pre-cut and pre-scored to make folding easier, or full sized sheets of cardstock can be purchased and cut to the desired size then folded in the appropriate place.

Envelopes can be purchased, or made by hand, and then stamped to match the stationery or card. Different envelope templates are available for purchase to make the process easier, but many stampers simply use an old envelope as a template, trace the edges onto the new paper, and cut and paste in the appropriate places to form the envelope.

Personalized stationery can be very costly, but with rubber stamps, stationery can be created quickly and inexpensively to match the tone of the letter or to bear the image of the recipients favorite flower.
