Before you start stitching through your first pattern, there are a few basic things to know.
Finished measurements
Most patterns begin by listing the finished measurement of the garment. This simply means what size the final piece will be if you follow the yarn and needle guidelines. Different garments list different figures. For instance, a scarf pattern will give you a length and width measurement, a hat pattern will give you a circumference measurement, and a sweater pattern will give you a chest and length measurement. It is important to carefully consider the finished measurement of a piece, or you may end up with a sweater that is too tight or a hat that won’t fit your head.
Required materials
The next set of information in the knitting pattern lists what materials you need to complete the piece. The first is a yarn recommendation listing the type of fiber and the suggested color. If there is more than one color in the piece, the pattern will list a main color and a contrasting color. The pattern will also give a needle size recommendation. You can make substitutions if you stay within the same yarn weight. If you use a different weight of yarn or needles, your garment could be a completely different size from the given finished measurements.
