What supplies should I buy to learn how to crochet?

You need a crochet hook, yarn, and scissors. The scissors can be whatever pair you have lying around the house, but pick the crochet hook and yarn with care.

The crochet hook should fit comfortably into your hand, which will probably be a size H, I, or J hook. Notice how the hook connects to the handle—does the handle taper into the hook or does the handle cut down into the hook? If you can, borrow or buy one of each hook type in the size you are most comfortable with when you hold it. This way, you can easily find the type of hook that you prefer without too much frustration, and you have not bought a set of hooks of the wrong type. Now, you can buy sets, if you like, and having a double of a few crochet hooks is always nice in case a friend who crochets needs to borrow one.

Most beginner books will tell you to buy a fuzzy or a dark yarn. Do not do this! If you do, you will not be able to learn what the stitches are supposed to look like.

Buy a pale yarn, such as white, in a standard worsted weight yarn, which should be about 1/4 inch in diameter. If you can, pick one that feels sort of spongy to the touch and does not split into its composite strands. This will show the stitches best.

To test a yarn to see if it splits easily, gently hold a strand between your thumb and forefinger and roll your fingers slightly—if you feel the strands moving apart, stop immediately. Avoid that yarn until you are somewhat comfortable with crocheting. Avoid using thread, rope, or a delicate yarn when starting out.

Following this advice will make learning to crochet a lot easier.
