How do North American and European abbreviations differ?

If you are visual, you will probably primarily notice one thing from reading a European pattern: the stitches they say to use do not make sense.

Why is this? The European/Australian name system for the stitches is one off of ours. This can be most easily explained with a list.

U.S./Canada —> Europe/Australia
slip stitch —> slip stitch (or single crochet)
single crochet —> double crochet
half double crochet —> half-treble crochet
double crochet —> treble crochet
triple (or treble) crochet —> double treble crochet
