A story that offers promise to craft retailers:
Darby McQuade has owned Jackalope, a New Mexico retail empire specializing in international crafts, pottery and furniture, for 30 years. He has built it to 150 employees in five locations with revenues of $10 million for 2005 (and $15 million projected for 2006). But you won't catch him in an executive suite. He lives on the grounds of the Santa Fe store and on a recent morning, greeted three customers standing outside his door.
Customers are often drawn to McQuade's home, with 130 white doves roosting on the second floor balcony. More than once he has run into unexpected visitors, drawn by the art and furniture that looks like an extension of Jackalope's colorful inventory. He finds it amusing.
