What do I do if I keep losing stitches?

If there is one mistake that every beginning crocheter makes, this is it. Because the crocheter must find the base loops in crochet, the beginning crocheter does not necessarily realize that the base loops look a little different at ends of each row, but still need to be crocheted to keep the stitch count.

The most common place to lose a stitch is at the beginning of each row. In most patterns, if you chain one at the beginning of the row (|), you must also crochet into the base loop that the chain is attached to ( |). If you do not understand this, ask your teacher for help.

Sometimes, someone will lose stitches in the middle of the fabric. Most often, this occurs in fluffy yarns, particularly dark ones. To check that there is not another base loop to work before the one you are about to enter, learn to analyze by feel. Use your fingers to feel the fabric for thin places that a hook should go through.

To make sure you do not lose stitches, it is a good idea to count how many stitches you have after every row so you lose as little work as possible if you do lose a stitch. Once you become comfortable and lose stitches less often, it is still prudent to check your stitch count every few rows.
