What do I do if I am gaining stitches?

This is a less common problem than losing stitches, but it still happens with some frequency among beginners. An immediate fix: stop working into the loop that your starting chain comes out of ( |).

This, though, may not have been your problem, and if it is not, the fabric you intend to be square or rectangular will begin looking more like a rhombus. Therefore, critically eye the other end of each row. Should you be working into every base loop that you are working?

Rarely, someone might pick up stitches from the center of the row. Visual learners might be able to identify these locations by sight, since stitch increases have a different look and a slightly different feel than regular stitches. If you cannot find them this way, watch your fabric while you unravel it, and stop when you get to a point where you have pulled one stitch out but one still remains in the base loop.

If you have this problem of gaining stitches, do a stitch count every row to make sure you do not gain any. Once this is less of a problem, you should still count your stitches once every few rows for security.
