The only time a Bonsai should not be kept in direct sunlight is immediately after repotting or after a major trim. You can also substitute bright light, but your Bonsai should not be closer than 12" away from the light source. East, west and southern exposures work best. If you choose a northern exposure, you will need to have "grow lights." These lights should stay on for at least 16 hours a day and the lamp should be no more than 2 inches from the top of the tree. Incandescent light should never be used as it is too hot. There are Bonsais that do not require as much light as other trees. If you do not have light coming from either of the aforementioned directions you may want to consider one of these trees.
