There are many individuals, living in North America, that are not familiar with the southern portion of the Americas, known as South America. South America is a massive land area with a great deal to offer its people as well as interested visitors. South America covers an area of over 6.8 million square miles and covers just about 3.5% of the Earth’s total surface. It is ranked the fourth largest continent, as far as area is concerned. South America had an estimated population of more than 3.7 million people in 2005 which ranked it the fourth most populated continent on the planet. It is located in the western hemisphere, with a large majority of the region positioned in the southern hemisphere as well. South America is one of the seven continents and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, the Pacific Ocean on the west, and North America and the Caribbean Sea to the northwest. The continent, South America, includes twelve countries and three major territories. It is home to some of the most magnificent landforms in the world such as, the Amazon River, Angel Falls (the world’s highest water falls), the Andes Mountains and many more.
