Caring for Your Aquarium Fish

In addition to caring for the aquarium and the water quality, you need to care for the fish themselves. With regular observation and a few general rules of thumb, however, you should be able to keep your fish in great shape.

Along with quality water, food is the most basic need of fish. Different experts recommend different mealtime frequencies, but you will probably be safe if you feed your fish every other day (slightly less often for saltwater fish). In addition, vary the diet for your fish, including pellets and flakes for freshwater fish and lettuce or even cut-up shrimp for saltwater fish.

Be careful adding fish to your aquarium. Make sure a fish appears healthy before you purchase it, and only add a few fish to your aquarium at a time, as extreme increases in fish can disrupt chemical levels. Finally, obtain expert advice regarding whether the fish you want to add will be compatible with the fish you already own.

If you begin to notice certain fish that don’t swim well or develop colored blotches, contact a pet store or veterinarian for advice and/or fish medicine that you can add to the tank. Keep in mind, however, that fish don’t live forever, nor do they have a human lifespan.
