Dehumidifiers have a basic design, so there’s not much difference in the use and maintenance methods of different models. You don’t need to spend much time or energy taking care of your dehumidifier; simply clean the different parts of it from time to time.

Once a year, clean the coils inside your dehumidifier. Steam wash the coils or use the brush attachment on a vacuum, and then use a scrub brush and spray cleaner to remove any remaining dirt. Also, annually replace or clean (with warm, soapy bleach) the filter in the front grill area. Finally, clean the water reservoir every few months to present mineral buildup.

The dehumidifier will shut off when the bucket is full, so empty it soon and keep the dehumidifier will continue running. It’s also a good idea to find a use for the deposited water. Rather than pouring it down the sink, water outdoor plants or wash your car with the excess water.

Your dehumidifier should run constantly. If you hear your dehumidifier running, that means it is working. If you notice abnormal noises such as squealing, however, you may have a problem and may need to replace a part, such as a fan motor. Turn the machine off, clean it, and turn it on again to see if you still hear the noise. Be careful, however; don’t short-cycle the cooling system by turning the dehumidifier off and immediately on again.

In order to best operate your dehumidifier, pull it away from walls and windows so that the maximum amount of air will flow over the coils. In addition, make sure the temperature in the room is at least sixty-five degrees. If the temperature is under sixty-five degrees, the coils in the dehumidifier will begin to freeze. If you ever see frost on the dehumidifier coils, the room is too cold, and you should turn up the heat and temporarily turn off the dehumidifier to defrost it.
