The rain is over, the rivers are running, and so is your nose - it must be allergy season. What can you do to help yourself if you want to avoid prescription medicine? There are a lot of alternative therapies that have been touted for allergic rhinitis, including stinging nettle, co-enzyme Q, grape seed extract and Echinacea, but there is not a lot of convincing data for most of these herbs and supplements when it comes to stopping your sneezing.

One herb, butterbur, does show promise; it seems to inhibit the production of inflammatory substances that can cause allergic symptoms. If you decide to try this, look for a product that is standardized to contain a minimum of 7.5 mg petasin and isopetasin. For a safe product, be sure to look for something that says "UPA-Free." One thing to be aware of: Butterbur is a member of the ragweed family, so if you are allergic to these plants, steer clear.
