This is a wonderfully diverse city. Birmingham is a big city with a small town feeling. Although it is one of the 60 largest metropolitan areas in the country, Birmingham has not grown too large to enjoy. The drive from one end of town to another is not a half day long excursion. While rush hour traffic is definitely noticeable, enough highway improvements have been made to allow a relative ease of movement. That leaves plenty of time for those things which have disappeared from living in most major cities: time to visit the restaurant on the other side of town even though rush hour is not quite over and time to spend enjoying living in the area.

Gianmarco's Restaurant (Italian) 721 Broadway St., Birmingham, AL (205) 871-9622. Family owned and operated. Quaint 55-seat restaurant features an open kitchen. Features lots of traditional, northern Italian dished, lots of pastas, veal and fish, open grilling in the Tuscan style. The prices are excellent (nothing over $18) and the quality is excellent. Wine list is excellent and is priced just above retail. Ask if they have special wine not on the menu. Reservations are highly recommended.

Highlands Bar and Grill (Contemporary Southern) 2011 11th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL (205) 939-1400 or www.highlandsbarandgrill.com. This is the best restaurant in town. Chef Frank Stitt turns fresh, local ingredients into culinary art. A must if you go: stone ground baked grits with country ham, fresh thyme, wild mushrooms, and parmesan. Dinner (closed Sunday-Monday; reservations recommended).

Pauli’s Bar and Grill (Local traditional) 7193-D Highway 72 West, Madison, AL (256) 722-0071 or www.paulisbarandgrill.com. Colorful history and a delectable menu rival one another for the spotlight at Simp McGhee’s, Decatur’s signature restaurant. Located in the Old Decatur Historic District, Simp’s saloon atmosphere lends credence to fascinating stories about the goings on of a riverboat captain who docked there in the 1800s. Experience the history while waiting to enjoy seafood-filled mushroom caps; snapper topped with shrimp, crab, mushrooms and green onions; and beef tenderloin marinated and cooked to perfection, all enhanced by daringly delicious desserts. Be sure to ask to be seated upstairs. The ambience is much better there. Menu uniquely reflects the cuisine of a region and city settled from “voyagers” from the four corners of the world: the Indians, French, Acadians, Spanish, Africans, English, West Indians, German, Irish, and Italians who combined their tastes and recipes with the native ingredients to create what is known as Creole Cuisine. Features Gulf Coast Creole cuisine and a wonderful view of the Gulf of Mexico. Ask for a fresh Caesar salad prepared tableside. Famous for Pecan Snapper. Reservations recommended. Dinner.

You can spend a whole weekend in Montgomery and never see it all. While there, you can explore life in the 19th-century South at Old Alabama Town, explore the arts at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts or spend the day learning about the era of Civil Rights. Rosa Parks, the African-American woman who refused to ride in the back of the bus and was very instrumental in this era, was arrested in Montgomery. Here you will find several attractions in her honor. Literary scholars will want to visit the Fitzgerald Museum, while kids must take a trip to the Montgomery Zoo. Be sure to eat some down-home southern food while you are here. Don’t miss the following attractions:

Civil Rights Memorial400 Washington Ave. (334) 264-0286 (free)
The names of 40 people killed in the battle for civil rights between 1954, when the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed segregation, and 1968, the year of the assassination of Martin Luther King, are embedded in this round, flat, granite sculpture. Water flows gently over the surface of the inspiring memorial, designed by Maya Lin, who also created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Rosa Parks Library and Museum251 Montgomery Street (334) 241-8661 (fee)

The museum helps visitors relive this tumultuous era with a video, artifacts, historical documents, a life-size statue of Rosa Parks, and a replica of the bus in which she sat that day.

Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church
454 Dexter Ave. (334) 263-3970 (fee) or www.cr.nps.gov/nr/travel/civilrights/al7.h...
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., used the pulpit of this church to lead the 1955-56 Montgomery bus boycotts, which ignited the civil rights movement.
