Gianmarco's Restaurant (Italian) 721 Broadway St., Birmingham, AL (205) 871-9622. Family owned and operated. Quaint 55-seat restaurant features an open kitchen. Features lots of traditional, northern Italian dished, lots of pastas, veal and fish, open grilling in the Tuscan style. The prices are excellent (nothing over $18) and the quality is excellent. Wine list is excellent and is priced just above retail. Ask if they have special wine not on the menu. Reservations are highly recommended.

Highlands Bar and Grill (Contemporary Southern) 2011 11th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL (205) 939-1400 or www.highlandsbarandgrill.com. This is the best restaurant in town. Chef Frank Stitt turns fresh, local ingredients into culinary art. A must if you go: stone ground baked grits with country ham, fresh thyme, wild mushrooms, and parmesan. Dinner (closed Sunday-Monday; reservations recommended).

Pauli’s Bar and Grill (Local traditional) 7193-D Highway 72 West, Madison, AL (256) 722-0071 or www.paulisbarandgrill.com. Family owned and operated. Combines local traditions, modern cuisine and cosmopolitan influences to create excellent food. Quaint dining room with nice ambiance. Wonderful service and wine list. Lunch, dinner.

Simp McGhee’s (Local traditional) 725 Bank Street NW, Decatur, AL 35601 (256) 353-6284. Colorful history and a delectable menu rival one another for the spotlight at Simp McGhee’s, Decatur’s signature restaurant. Located in the Old Decatur Historic District, Simp’s saloon atmosphere lends credence to fascinating stories about the goings on of a riverboat captain who docked there in the 1800s. Experience the history while waiting to enjoy seafood-filled mushroom caps; snapper topped with shrimp, crab, mushrooms and green onions; and beef tenderloin marinated and cooked to perfection, all enhanced by daringly delicious desserts. Be sure to ask to be seated upstairs. The ambience is much better there. Lunch, dinner.

Menu uniquely reflects the cuisine of a region and city settled from “voyagers” from the four corners of the world: the Indians, French, Acadians, Spanish, Africans, English, West Indians, German, Irish, and Italians who combined their tastes and recipes with the native ingredients to create what is known as Creole Cuisine. Features Gulf Coast Creole cuisine and a wonderful view of the Gulf of Mexico. Ask for a fresh Caesar salad prepared tableside. Famous for Pecan Snapper. Reservations recommended. Dinner.
