A press release is a written statement for the media. You might also have heard press releases referred to as “news releases.” This term is a good reminder that press releases are about -- first and foremost -- news. Newspapers and television stations receive hundreds of press releases every day from many different sources including businesses, governmental agencies, non-profits, schools, and entertainment companies. Basically, anyone who wants to capture the media’s attention with a message sends a press release. Every day, many of those press releases end up in the recycling bin. To ensure that does not happen to yours, make sure your “news release” does indeed contain useful, accurate and interesting news.

Businesses, in particular, use press releases for a variety of goals:

  • to announce a new product or service offering
  • to announce quarterly results
  • to announce awards and special recognitions
  • to announce new hires, employee promotions, and high-profile personnel changes
  • to announce humanitarian efforts or community activism
  • to announce mergers and acquisitions
  • to speak out about a business trend
