The main objective of a Media Buyer is to assist a company or business in advertising their services or product. This assistance includes working with the company or business to determine the type of media in which the product or service should be promoted, such as television, newspaper, internet, etc. The target audience is taken into consideration when this decision is made. The Media Buyer then purchases the “space” or “time” needed to advertise the product or service. Purchasing time refers to movie ads, television, or radio, while purchasing space refers to internet ads, newspaper ads, or magazine ads. A Media Buyer’s goal is to ensure that the highest possible amount of the target audience will see or hear the ad at the lowest possible cost to the company or business that is promoting the service or product. Other responsibilities of a Media Buyer include preparing costs for their clients and recording transactions. Often times, Media Buyers work on several accounts for several different clients at one time. Media Buyers must be well-rounded, with the ability to not only work well with words and numbers, but also work well with people. Media Buyers act as consultants to their clients, so being well-versed in communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as mathematical skills and organizational skills are needed.
