Your business fills a unique niche in the marketplace. Your logo should reflect that place and how you fill it. Choose graphics and type styles that reflect the tone of your business. The local theme park would naturally want to incorporate a fun element to their logo design; and an antique doll shop would naturally want to infuse it’s logo with the feeling of history and charm.

But these rules aren’t as rigid as they might sound. A church might want to reach a younger demographic than has historically filled out its membership roster and therefore might choose to incorporate a design that is appealing to teenagers and young families.

Once you’ve decided on a theme, remember that there are three basic types of logos. One type uses a graphic which represents what your company does, such as a picture of the church for a minister or pastor. Another type is the font-based logo, which uses just type and an imaginative treatment of the typeface to make it distinctive. The third type of logo uses abstract symbols/art which have no meaning other than being used as a symbol for the company. An example of this would be the Nike swoosh. But whichever of these logo types you choose, your customers should be able to tell what you do just by looking at your logo.
