There are two ways to develop a logo design; design your own and hire a professional.
This is one area where it’s almost always better to hire a professional, but if you decide to go for it on your own, remember these basic guidelines:

  • Keep your logo design simple.
  • Bold images are more visible than delicate ones.
  • Design your logo in black and white then add color if it needs it.
  • Balance is key. Don’t allow any one element of the design to overpower the rest.
  • Scalable images work best. Your logo design needs to fit on your business cards, billboards and everything in between.

Even if you have some artistic talent, you may wish to hire a professional to take advantage of their knowledge of printing processes and costs. A professional can advise you on how your logo design will look on a billboard and whether or not it will be recognizable if it’s on a business card.

When you hire a professional, they will handle much of the artistic components of your logo design, but there are still things you must do before you start. Write down your slogan or mission statement and work within that framework to build your design.

Brainstorm to come up with all the possibilities. Go over them, select 10 or 15 that seem to be good ideas and work with them until you can narrow the field down to 2 or 3 that are really good. At that point you may be able to combine the best of what remains or easily discard the two that just don’t work for you. Once you’ve come to a decision, show the design to your family and friends. Ask for their honest opinion and consider taking their advice. Their eyes are fresh and their impression of the design may be very much like those of your potential customers.
