A typical focus group would include six to ten people. If the group were any smaller, the discussion could drag due to lack of input or the conversation could be dominated by one or two people. On the other hand, if the group were any bigger, chaos could easily reign, with people talking at once, having to wait too long to respond to a question or offer their input in the conversation. Bigger groups also encourage side conversations, which are not beneficial to the goal of the focus group. Once established, the moderator would offer a question or topic to the group. The group then takes the question and discusses it among themselves, reacting to each other’s comments and questions. To gather the data, video recording, audio recording, manual note taking or a combination of these is used. A focus group will generally last around two hours, with 90 minutes of discussion and 30 minutes of question and answer time
