Focus groups can cover a very wide range of topics. Anything from Chinese food to a recent event held by an influential company can be discussed. The goal of the focus group is to figure out what about the topic being discussed is working well and what is not working well. The goal is met by the group of people that is gathered to discuss the topic and their varying opinions and points of view that are brought to the table.
Focus groups generate data through the give and take of group discussion.Focus groups can also be used by companies promoting a new product. They can release the new product to a certain group of people, and then, after allowing a few weeks for use of the product, they can bring that group of people together. The group of people, or the focus group, can discuss the product, what they liked about it, what they didn’t like about. The company can then use this information to better the product before mass distribution to the general public. Focus groups go way beyond the normal “one-way flow of information” that an interview generally provides. It taps into human interaction which provides so much more data and information that can be used.
