First of all, start small. Remember that this process takes time and will touch every aspect of your organization. Begin by identifying the associations or impressions current or potential consumers have about your product or service. This means knowing your product and product lines inside and out. What are their benefits? How do they meet customer needs? How do they not? This is when market research – both quantitative and qualitative – can be helpful.

Think about your competitors. What do they do well? What do they not do well?
Then, put the market research and competitive intelligence together to determine where the needs are not being met in the marketplace and devise a plan to meet them.

Consider telling your story. What sets you apart? Most companies have great stories to share. It may be how your organization started out…or how your current president or CEO worked his or her way up from the mailroom. It could be a unique not-for-profit agency that you sponsor. Whatever makes your company special, tell it.

Finally, be consistent. This means in your interactions with employees, your customers…frankly, everyone you come in contact with. Decide how you want to be viewed as a company and make sure your actions are in line with that. In the end, your positive branding and upbeat corporate image will be your greatest assets.
