There are many types of signage from interior to exterior and from freestanding to building mounted and much more. Before a business chooses the type of signage to purchase it is beneficial to gain general knowledge of the different types. Also, knowing the types of signs and considering how well they will meet location and business' needs, will allow a business to select the kind of signs needed for a businesses success.
Below is a brief description of each in order to familiarize businesses with available options.
There are three primary locations in which a business will typically use signs such as: building mounted signs, freestanding signs, and interior signs. Building mounted signs are exterior and can be connected to the roof, marquee, or building front. These signs may be either perpendicular or parallel to the buildings structure. Freestanding-exterior signs are usually held up by a structure attached to the foundation. There are many ways to enhance the look of the free standing sign such as landscaping or decorative covering. Interior signs advertise the location of the business which is positioned in a building such as a shopping center, office building, mall, ect. The two major purposes of interior signs are to offer direction in a safe and proficient manner, as required by federal law and to sway buyer choices or let potential customers know where each business is located. Sometimes a building itself can be considered as signage in which the locations structure and colors are standardized to help customers identify the business.
There are many other types of signage available to different business such as: banners, car graphics, magnetic, labels, decals, yard signs, and illuminated signs. Because of the various options when choosing a type of signage, a business must first assess the types and then decide which route to take and where to spend the money in advertising for their business.
