If you are planning a meeting in which lots of issues need to be addressed, it is often a good idea to create a questionnaire to see what your audience really thinks. The following are some things you should keep in mind to ensure that the questions in your questionnaire are effective:

• Explain why they are taking a questionnaire. Before asking participants to take the questionnaire, prepare them by explaining what it is for. Audiences are far more likely to be honest if they know what it is for and why you are giving it.

• Make participants feel important. Explain to the participants why you chose them to do this survey. Use language that makes them feel important. This will not only result in more honest answers, but more detailed ones as well.

• Determine the main point. To ensure that your questionnaire is not confusing, it is usually a good idea to determine what the main point of having the questionnaire is. Once you have determined this main point, make sure that every question in your survey has something to do with that main point.

• Keep the questions clear and concise. Make sure that the questions in your survey are very clear and to the point. The clearer the questions are, the more factual results you will get. Avoid using confusing sentence structures, double negatives, or large words. If you are dealing with average people, keep the questions to about a middle school reading level.

• Explain the results. If possible, share the results of the questionnaire with your participants. This may spark conversation or debate that will provide you with more information.
