If you are a beginner, there are three types of jumps that you could do. These are tandem, static line, and accelerated freefall.

If you are nervous about jumping by yourself, tandem might be the way to go. If you choose to jump tandem, you will be strapped to a jumpmaster the entire time. A jumpmaster is basically an expert at skydiving. You will wear a harness that is attached to the jumpmaster’s parachute system and he or she will control the entire jump, from exit to landing. This method usually does not require many classes, because you are simply along for the ride.

If you would prefer to jump by yourself, but you don’t want to pull your own rip cord, then a static line jump is just for you. You will make the jump from about 3,000 feet, but the cord that triggers your parachute will be attached to the plane. Once you jump, the cord will pull open your parachute almost immediately. Although there is limited free fall during a static line jump, you do have the ability to steer yourself to the ground. Usually, you will be wearing a radio that allows the instructor to tell you where to go in order to land safely. This jump requires about six hours of classes because you need to learn how to steer, land, and what to do in an emergency.

If you have the desire to free fall, then an Accelerated Freefall might be the jump for you. In this style of jump, you are almost completely on your own. Once you jump from the plane, you are in charge of pulling your own rip cord and landing. Two instructors will jump out with you, holding on to you during the freefall. During this freefall, you will go through a “practice pull” three times. This will show the instructors that it is ok to let you go and that you aren’t going crazy from the thrill. If you are unable to perform the drill, then the instructor will assume you’re too nervous and pull it for you. If you are able to do it, then they will leave you to pull the cord. Once your shoot is open, they will leave you to float to the ground by yourself. This type of jump requires almost a full days worth of lessons.
