Up until the last few years, mosquitoes have been nothing more than an annoyance and a nuisance, stealing the joy and fun out of vacation and summer nights. Now they are a legitimate worry and something we pay close attention to due the West Nile Virus. Twenty-five hundred different species of mosquitoes are known throughout the world of which 200 can be found in the United States. It is reported that there are 77 species located in Florida alone. Aside from West Nile, mosquitoes can transmit all sorts of diseases to animals and humans including yellow fever and malaria. The actual word “mosquito” is Portuguese meaning, “little fly”. The use of the word in North America dates back to 1583.
