Most of the activities on an Antarctica vacation revolve around the two different cruise types. Few vacation groups are going to fly into the tiny airports that are located on the mainland of Antarctica. You can either take a short (9-12 days) or a long (13-25) day cruise. Obviously you are not going to see the 3 or 4 day cruises that visit Bahamas also featuring Antarctica; these are going to be much longer. The activities available while you are on the cruise ship are going to vary as well.

The number one activity is looking upon the wildlife that is so unique to this area of the world. On a trip around the peninsula of Antarctica you will the breeding grounds of seabirds, penguins, and seals. Antarctica is also home to millions of marine animals. Most travelers will see whales on a daily basis, with at least one sighting while on a shorter cruise. The structure of the land will be something to behold as well. Hundreds of years of ice have piled up on top of each other.

Besides simply taking in the wildlife, you can also sign up to do some other more adventurous activities. While a walk on the mainland of Antarctica is a must for all travelers, you may choose to camp a night away from the ship. You will be sleeping in an area that is completely un-inhabitable by mankind. Frightening, yet exhilarating at the same time. You can also choose to throw on a wetsuit and go scuba diving in the area around the peninsula. You can also choose to grab a kayak and make your away around by your own strength. There is also time of enlightenment of the mind while on the boat. Most ships give daily lectures about some of the things you are seeing around the ship, and the history behind Antarctica. Many travelers have also invested in a journal and have used this time to self reflect about the trip and the reality that they have left.
