In terms of duration, adventure races fall into one of three categories: sprint, adventure, and expedition.
Sprint: A sprint is an adventure race that lasts up to eight hours.
Adventure: This race will take between 8 and 48 hours. Therefore, it will probably involve some nocturnal travel, usually on foot or on mountain bike.
Expedition: Any adventure race longer than 48 hours falls into this category. Expeditions are not for the faint of heart or for those who think the Ironman triathlon sounds kind of hard. Famous expedition races include the Eco-Challenge and the Beast of the East.
Most adventure races take place in wilderness areas, sometimes under extreme conditions such as those of the desert or the mountains. However, urban adventure races like the Wild Onion has also experienced their share of popularity of. Don't be surprised to hear of a new Onion-like event coming soon to a city near you.
