Although many people do cross over to adventure racing from the triathlon, adventure racing is different from the triathlon into three major ways. First, adventure races almost always involve more than three sports, and these sports are likely to be of the outdoor, rugged variety. For example, adventure racers may paddle their way to the finish line through whitewater, or may climb a sheer cliff in the middle of their route. Second, adventure racing almost always requires orienteering, using a map provided by the race organizers and a compass. Since this is an important component of the race, race participants often will not know the details of the course until the race has already begun. Third, while triathletes compete as individuals, adventure racers compete in teams. The requirements for teams vary from race to race, but the most standard format is a co-ed team of four. Unless all four team members cross the finish line, the team has not finish the race. Teamwork can be the biggest challenge of all when tensions run high mid-race; and for this very reason, many athletes prefer adventure racing to more individualistic sports.
