To work with the tax accounting system means you have to work with your Tax Accountant. To do this there are steps you can take to help you prepare for your next Tax Accountant visit and lessen the burden on him. These tips include:
· Keep the Books: Managing the books is the most important thing any business owner has to do. As a matter of fact, the Internal Revenue Code section 6001 requires that every person liable for tax maintain accounting records. Remember, you have to prove to the IRS whether you owe taxes or not. You do this by keeping accurate records.
· Keep Your Receipts Straight: Don't make the mistake of mixing your personal and business transactions and receipts together. Otherwise, you won’t know what is what. If you know what type of business structure you have, keeping accurate records in the proper place will be easy.
· Keep Backups: After you file your return, keep your receipts. You are supposed to keep your receipts and tax forms for at least three years. This way, if you have to refer back to them, you’ll have a way to retrieve them as required.
· Know Your Records and Use Them: Whatever you do, don’t just tuck your tax, accounting forms, and records away. Learn what they are and understand their purposes. Use them to make sense of what you are doing on a financial basis. Tax accounting is a useful tool because the data you get from accounting records serve a purpose. They help you manage your business. You can use them to help you prepare a budget. They help you control your tax burden. The more you know about your accounting system, the better you will be and can run your business more efficiently.
· Ask Questions: When engaging your Tax Accountant, ask questions. After he is done, review any information he gives you and if anything doesn't look proper or correct, ask questions. The bottom line is, it's your responsibility to make sure everything is right.
· Be Proactive. Subscribe to as many publications in your industry as you can. Read the Wall Street Journal and Entrepreneur magazine. Be constantly looking for tax changes, new developments and strategies. This way when your Tax Accountant goes over your records, you will have the latest information so as to verify his results. Tax accounting is a continuous changing field. As new tax laws are added or old ones subtracted, forms have to be created or deleted to match those changes. So keep up with it.
· Fulfill Your Obligations: You have to know what your obligations and responsibilities are as a taxpayer. Take a good look at your tax form when you sign it and see what it reads below your signature. There is a declaration there that states under penalty of perjury that you've examined the return along with all of the accompanying schedules and statements, and that to the best of your knowledge and belief, they're true, correct and complete. That’s why you have to verify everything your Tax Accountant does. It’s also the reason you have to understand tax accounting for your own sake.
· Don't Ignore the IRS. He will not go away. If your Tax Accountant did make a mistake, respond to IRS notices and correspondence in a timely manner. Tax accounting is a complicated issue. Mistakes do happen from time to time. If you ignore the problem, it may end up becoming a very expensive problem later.
