» Accounting Software Overview
There are over 3,500 accounting software products in the marketplace to choose from ranging in price from pocket change to millions of dollars. To further complicate matters, the information available on the various products often consists of thousands of documents full of marketing hype and sales puff. It often seems that the literature is designed more to convey a product image rather than cold hard facts that you can hang your hat on.
Accounting software is computer software that records and processes accounting transactions within functional modules such as
accounts payable,
accounts receivable, payroll and trial balance. It functions as an accounting information system. It may be developed in-house by the company or organization using it, may be purchased from a third party, or may be a combination of a third-party application software package with local modifications. It varies greatly in its complexity and cost.
One of the most challenging tasks you could face in your professional career is selecting an accounting software package that matches the needs of your client or company. The product must be just right: It shouldn’t contain more features than you need (which adds to its cost and makes it more complicated and difficult to use), it should incorporate features that streamline the operation of your business and it should be easy enough to customize to your unique business needs so you don’t have to take on more manual accounting operations to compensate for the software’s limitations. Finally, you should feel confident during the many years the software serves you that its publisher will be able to provide upgrades and bug fixes as needed.
